Fossils of Texas

A Journey

August 22nd, 2009

Well Lance and I headed for a few local spots being in the Grayson, and the other
site Grayson with Mainstreet contact...

At the first site I found my first Goniophorus scotti... YIPPEE!

My best finds of the day....

The second site had holectypus but everyone of them was destroyed.....

Here is a pic of the site...

June 27th, 2009

Lance and I hit an Eagle Ford Formation.

My best find was this beautiful ammonite pictured below. Also
pictured are 2 very nice crabs that Lance kindly donated to the, I can find any fund.

This is a pic of the site. It was over 100 and pretty uncomfortable...

Some nice crabs that Lance found (pictured below)

Eagleford Site

March 22nd, 2009

On the way back from Gore, Lance and I stopped at a site that Lance had
noticed on the trip up. We found some beautiful ammonite casts. These are extremely fragile.

Lance checking the site

March 14th, 2009

Lance and I headed out to a Grayson Formation area.

We found shark teeth and a few echs...

It had rained hard for several days so walking with a ton of mud
was surprisingly hard.....Good for some laughs too...
A few from one of the places we hunted

One of the echs Lance found

One of my best finds

  Leptostryrax macrorhiza  below
A nice shark tooth I found (pic by Lance)
Click on the pic for a view of the other side..

Also a very nice nautilus that Lance spotted

January 18th, 2009...

Lance and I hit some local spots and lucked out with the echs.
We found tetragrammas, salenias, and heart urchins etc.

This is a very nice tetragramma that Lance found.

One of my favorite salenias I found.

All my echs not including a few nice heart urchins not pictured. (below

Sometimes smaller sites can be the most productive..
This small formation is where Lance scored a salenia and a tetragramma.. (below)

September 27th, 2008

Lance and I hit a spot we have found before, on the way back from the DPS hunt.

I found a really nice crinoid calyx (lower part of it). Also found  the crinoid cup in matrix.
(Pic by Lance)

Some of Lance's finds below. He found some very nice crinoid cups, and also shark teeth,
(the blueish colored fossils).  The shark is a petalodus.

What the Winchell Formation looks like

September 13th, 2008

Went to a quarry that we got permission to check out.
The formation appeared to be Goodland.

The echs I found below. The first shows the individual plates of the test of the echinoid.
I don't often see them like this.

Ignore the gray one. I used it to prop up the other.

September 6th, 2008

Found some nice echinoids on a hunt near Fort Worth, pictured below

Coenholectypus (Holectypus limitis)  Top left

Salenia (Middle)

Cyphosoma (Lower right)

A beautiful Salenia found by Lance (below)

Throwing these on here. They are from a recent hunt, several weeks ago.
Goodland Formation

August 31st, 2008

Headed northeast for a quick fossil trip.
The exposure was Goodland, I believe.

Lance found a  salenia (echinoid). (below)
He also found several shark teeth.

This is a group shot of some of the fossils I found.
I keep saying that I am not going to pick up any more
worm tubes, but some of them are begging to come home with me.

August 17th, 2008. We headed out to check one of Lance's sites.
I haven't found many crabs before in Texas, mainly just bits and
pieces, but finally found some! They were more than welcome too!
One happy hunt!

Thanks to Lance for most of the pics....forgot to bring my camera
card.

Ammonite

Xanthosia crab above.

The above may be a lobster, not a crab.

These football-shaped crabs are Xanthosia.

I really wanted to post a pic of another crab I also found. The  matrix shows part of the crab,
and coming from it, is the tiniest ammonite I have ever seen. I only saw it when using a loop.
Tried to get numerous shots but my camera cannot pick it up clearly.

July 26th, 2008

Lance and I scouted some area sites with some success..
The fossils found that day will be photographed together.

Lance  left that one for someone else to find.

An echinoid (Heteraster) and ammonite found at the site pictured above.

A nautoloid in a small creek at site 2.

Fossilized wood (pretty sure), also found there.

3rd site has some nice echinoids, slabs of gastropods (snails),
and Lance found a shark tooth in excellent condition.

A good look at the exposure where  he found the tooth.

And, of course the tooth

The echinoid on top row, right, was one of those that
came from the site above.

July 4th, 2008

Hunted some local spots near here with a few good finds..
Fossils from both sites included.

We found some nice ammonites here, and Lance found a great crab,
pictured below...

My favorite find of the day above

Some more of Lance's finds above

On May 31st, Lance and I headed to the Mansfield area to join two local hunters from there, Cody and Jordan...

Shark teeth, and verts were found by all.

First spot where we hunted below

Jordan, Cody, and Lance hit the site.

Something all fossil hunters hate, Cody (center), attacked by fireants.
Pic by Lance

A ptychodus tooth I found. (A favorite shark tooth of mine)

One of the verts I found. The other I found was black and
pretty cool, but it is not pictured.

Lance heading up th ravine. A site he shared with everyone.
Another good site for teeth, verts, etc.

Cody and Jordan hunting the top.

The last spot didn't yield anything much but we wanted to
check it out. You know how it goes, you might miss something.

All in all, a fun hunt!

Lance borrowed the TAPS wagon for the trip. It was a pretty rough road heading into
this Eagleford area, as you can see above.

Lance by the TAPS mobile..

This area is where I found several Ptychodus teeth, one pictured below.

Another site we hit

The ammonite Lance found there

(pic by Lance)

Next stop was near Gateway

An ammonite I found when we entered (below)

An echinoid in matrix

A couple Lance found but didn't want... YAY!
I like the smaller ones as well as the giants..

Saturday, May 10th, 2008, Lance and I hit a few local sites.

Below is our trip to an old pit or quarry. These fossils that we found were in the
Duck Creek Formation.

The view coming in...

A very nice brachiopod, and the tiny ech, Goniophorus scotti
Some of Lance's finds

The general area where he found them.

Another brach and a broken shark tooth. That is the only shark tooth
that I have ever found at that site.

The Goniophrus scotti that I found.. A first for me!

Worm tube (left), brach (center), and not sure about the other.

The first kind of these worm tubes that I have found. Was going
to stop picking them up, but couldn't resist.

Lance heading down to the bottom of the quarry. We didn't find
as much on the other side. We checked out the fresh falls though.
I only found a squashed large echinoid.

The nest was to the left of where Lance was walking, in one
of the piles of rubble. It was a section of what looked like
an old brick, fireplace.
